An NPE, which stands for “Not Parent Expected” is a person who finds out later in life that one or more parents are not their biological parent. Usually it’s confirmed by a DNA test such as Ancestry DNA or 23 and Me. Often it is the father that the NPE finds out is not their biological parent. However, It can also apply to adoptees or donor conceived people as well. It is sometimes referred as MPE, “Misattributed Parental Event”. An NPE can suffer a severe trauma reaction similar to PTSD.
